Chef Joe: A Culinary Journey Interrupted by Unfortunate Circumstance

Mad Max's latest adventure takes us to the culinary haven known as Big Time Taverna, nestled beautifully among the impressive residences of the St. Francis canals. Traditionally owned by the late Peri, the Taverna is now run by his wife Melina, who continues to uphold its rich legacy. With the roads near the canals notoriously bad for an E-BakTuk, I ventured without Mad Max to meet the man behind the magic, Joe the Chef.

Our conversation kicked off with Joe sharing how he ended up at the Greek, as he affectionately calls it. Way back in 1995, Joe was selected over two other candidates for a trainee position at a Greek restaurant in the Randburg Waterfront. Joe recalls, "He was such a nice man, and over eight months, he taught me how to be a Greek chef." Shortly after this Joe joined the Big Time in Melville and when the family relocated to the Eastern Cape, so did Joe, resulting in a twenty-nine-year relationship with the people of St. Francis Bay.

Reflecting on nearly three decades, Joe mentioned, "I just love cooking and creating new dishes for people to enjoy." If you've ever dined at the Taverna, there's a good chance you've experienced Joe's passion, creativity, and culinary skills.

When our conversation turned to Joe's recent accident, his mood shifted to a more serious tone. Joe explained how years of hard work had allowed him to start building his house. "I still have two children at school, and putting a roof over our heads is very important to me," he said. The dream of finishing the house has been put on hold. "I now need an operation if I am going to get the use of my one hand, and it is very expensive. This has affected me so badly because my lifestyle is not to take handouts." Joe shared the anxiety and stress the situation has placed on him, feeling cornered and trapped. In a single life-changing moment, this proud and independent father no longer had his destiny in his own hands, which is simply heartbreaking.

As we have set up a fundraising effort, I asked Joe to tell us about the accident. "I was cycling down the hill at the stop street that goes to the police station. His car pulled out without indicating, and we connected. My first thought was of my children, and then I felt around to understand if anything was broken." While Joe considers himself lucky to be alive, his one arm was badly damaged and will not heal without surgery.

During our chat, I learned how Joe supplements his Chef's income by working other jobs for locals. It dawned on me that Joe is not just a talent hidden behind the kitchen walls but also well-known for his hard work in our community. Joe expressed his gratitude for those who have already donated funds, saying, "Even myself, I can't believe the love all the people in St. Francis have been giving me. I think we all want to help each other because I have been here for twenty-five years, God bless them."

When I asked Joe about his most challenging memory while working at Big Time, he fondly recounted a pressured situation when three of his colleagues left simultaneously. Peri challenged Joe to maintain the standard while building a new team. Joe recalls, "I was so nervous about letting everyone down, but we managed to get through it. I was left very proud."

Nearing the end of our conversation, as I listened to Joe talk about his road to recovery, I found myself emotionally drawn in by his resilience and dedication. He continued, "I am hoping God will be with me so I can give something back to all the people who have helped me. If I can recover my strength, I can finish my goals."

Joe is not only a beloved character in our village but also a remarkable man who has earned the respect of the community. This is evident in the willingness of so many people to come forward with whatever they can to support his much-needed operation. A fund has been set up to raise the money needed for Joe's operation. We also appeal to the community to support Joe's 80's dinner dance and blind auction on Friday, 26 July (details below).

Please note, that I've collaborated with Grammarly, ChatGPT and Mad Max, to bring you this article. Without assistance, I wouldn't have had the time to enjoy and finish this creative experience.
