Mad Max and the Echoes of Summer: A Tale of Community, Stories, and Smiles

In the vibrant tapestry of St. Francis Bay, Mad Max, once the unrivaled chariot of the town, found himself amidst an eclectic array of wheels brought in by holidaymakers. Fancy takkies graced the streets, from bikes with sidecars to sleek beach buggies, stealing the spotlight that Max had grown accustomed to. Yet, among them all, my favorite was Spook—an old classic Volkswagen Combi transformed into an electric marvel.

St Francis Bay's Electric Wheels, Mad Max and Spook.

As the summer season ebbed away, a symphony of goodbyes marked the exodus of holidaymakers. The streets, once buzzing with the laughter of tourists, now echoed with the familiar quiet of the town. Max, less challenged and regaining his title as the king of electric roads, cruised into town, his lamps held high, reclaiming his place in the heart of St. Francis Bay.

In the heart of the village, Max and I bumped into Jeremy and Kim, the local lovebirds. Over a cup of coffee, our attention was drawn to two young girls who couldn't help but notice Max as they passed. With a shared giggle, one of them exclaimed, "That's so cool!" Turning to Kim, I remarked, "It's just amazing how often Max brings a smile to people's faces."

As the summer solstice made its exit, yet still leaving us with many more days of summer, those smiles served as a gentle reminder. In this little village, each day brings the potential for shared joy and great moments. The 150 locals who gathered at the brewery for the first Story Slam of the year were a testament to the community's spirit.

#StorySlam, now 31 events old, is a celebration of true tales shared by five brave souls who own the mic for five minutes. Terrified yet willing, they spin stories based on the night's theme, with the R60 entry fee transforming into a collective force for good—a quick crunch of numbers reveals just short of 10k for o a charitable cause. Throughout 31 editions, Story Slam has generated an impressive bounty for various charities, illustrating the amplified connected level of care in this small coastal town.

So, as Max, the electric chariot, once again takes the lead in the streets, the echoes of summer linger. Each smile, each shared giggle, and each story told, remind us of the potential for joy in this little village.

In St. Francis Bay, the people and what we have here in a little piece of paradise, hold the power to enable us to smile and have a great day, every day.
